Hypertension: Controlling the Silent Killer
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the 'silent killer' because you usually don't notice it, while it can cause major damage to your heart, vessels, and kidneys.
What do the numbers mean?
When you have a blood pressure measurement, you get two numbers:
- Systolic (Top number): The pressure when the heart pumps.
- Diastolic (Bottom number): The pressure when the heart rests between two beats.
- An ideal value is around 120/80 mmHg. We speak of hypertension from 140/90 mmHg (with repeated measurements).
Professional Measurement
You can always come to us for a professional measurement and advice on your medication use. At the pharmacy, we are happy to check if your device is still measuring correctly and provide explanations on the correct technique.
Lifestyle Adjustments
You can do a lot yourself to lower your blood pressure:
- Less salt: Salt retains fluid and increases pressure. Use herbs and spices for flavor.
- Healthy weight: Every pound lost helps your blood pressure drop.
- Stress management: Chronic stress keeps your blood pressure continuously high. Find relaxation in walking, meditation, or hobbies.
- Limit alcohol: More than two glasses a day significantly increases blood pressure.
Correct Measurement at Home
Do you want to monitor your blood pressure at home? Always measure at the same time, at rest (sit for at least 5 minutes), and with your arm at heart level. Do not talk during the measurement.
